Developer Randall Presley bought 2,080 acres west of the I-10 in 1970, and land planner A. Wayne Smith drew up the first master plan for the area south of South Mountain in 1971, making Ahwatukee one of the earliest master-planned communities in the Phoenix metro. Its 'House of the Future,' a fully computerized home built in 1980 as a publicity attraction, drew roughly 250,000 visitors over two years of tour buses before it sold to a private owner.
Today Ahwatukee Foothills spans about 35.8 square miles, bounded by I-10, South Mountain, and the Gila River Indian Community. Low-rise, single-family neighborhoods with protected desert mountain views are the norm, and residents get direct access to South Mountain Park's more than 100 miles of hiking and biking trails, along with several golf courses and community lakes.
