Living in Carefree

Carefree incorporated in December 1984, largely to control its own zoning and stop annexation by a growing Scottsdale, and the town has protected a distinct identity ever since: custom homes built around and between the area's namesake granite boulder outcrops rather than graded flat, low overall density, and a planned town center designed in the 1950s and '60s around streets named Easy Street, Ho Road, and Nonchalant Avenue.

The Boulders Resort & Spa and its two Jay Morrish-designed golf courses sit at the town's core, wrapped in 1,300 acres of boulder-studded desert. Carefree Desert Gardens, a four-acre free public botanical garden along Easy Street, anchors a walkable downtown of galleries and studios, including the Historic Spanish Village, that's given the town a long-running reputation as a small arts colony as much as a resort address.

Resort Golf

The Boulders Resort & Spa anchors the town with two championship courses threading through 12-million-year-old granite boulder formations.

Custom Homes on Boulder Lots

Architect-built homes sited around natural granite outcrops rather than graded pads, prized for privacy and views on lots that can't be replicated once built out.

Arts & Gardens

A walkable town center around the Carefree Sundial with galleries at the Historic Spanish Village and the free, four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens.
